1.      Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery provides various diagnostic and surgical treatments, including dental implants, treatment of impacted teeth and apicoectomies.

Duties

The department aims to graduate dentists with high skills in oral surgery through a curriculum for undergraduates and postgraduates who will subsequently serve their community. In addition, the department aims to improve the level of scientific research through collaboration with different specialized centres and other universities.

2.      Prosthodontic Department

The Department of Prosthodontics provides theoretical, practical teaching during the second and third years of study and then clinical training during the fourth and fifth years. A wide range of prosthodontic treatments, including full-mouth rehabilitation under highly qualified and experienced prosthodontic supervision.

 Duties

The curriculum of prosthodontics subject is given over four academic years, starting in the second till fifth grade. The curriculum of the second and third grades includes practical training on laboratory procedures together with theoretical lectures. This is followed by clinical training in the fourth and fifth grades under the supervision of highly qualified academic staff. In addition, the department is responsible for teaching dental materials subject for the second-grade students.

 Treatment

The department contains specialized laboratories that deliver a wide range of dental and orofacial prostheses in addition to the prosthetic part of the dental implant.

3.      Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry and Orthodontic

The Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry department is dedicated to promoting the oral health of children and helping them maintain healthy, beautiful smiles throughout their lives. The department focuses on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence, as well as the prevention and treatment of dental problems. The department is responsible for training students to provide primary and comprehensive dental care to children during their senior year. The department is responsible for teaching the subject of orthodontics for the fourth and fifth grades including laboratory, clinical, and theoretical aspects of orthodontics.

  Duties

The department is responsible for teaching the following subjects:

·         Community dentistry for the third grade

·         Pedodontics for the fourth and fifth grades

·         Preventive dentistry for the fifth grade

  Treatment provided:

A wide range of therapies is provided for children seeking dental treatment including filings, prophylaxis, root canal treatments, pulpectomy, pulpotomy, extraction, space maintainers, and a range of other intervention types. All cases that require fixed or removable appliances can be treated by undergraduates under and orthodontic laboratory supervision of highly qualified staff members.

4.   The Department of Conservative Dentistry

The Department of Conservative Dentistry plays a crucial role in maintaining the oral health of patients by providing high-quality and minimally invasive treatments to restore and preserve the natural teeth of patients. The department offers a wide range of services, including the placement of dental fillings, root canal treatment and the restoration of teeth using dental crowns and bridges besides the theoretical part over the study years.

 Duties

This department is responsible for teaching of four academic years starting from first, third, fourth, and fifth grades. The subjects given by the department account for about 70% of the clinical subjects through all academic years, these subjects include:

·         Dental anatomy

·         Operative dentistry

·         Crown and bridge

·         Endodontics

All these subjects include practical and theoretical aspects

 Treatment provided

The department receives about 30 patients daily who are referred according to their treatment needs to receive a range of treatments that include restorations, endodontics, and crown and bridge work.

5.      Oral Diagnosis

The department includes the following branches: Oral medicine, Oral pathology, Oral     histology, General    pathology Oral radiology and Embryology and periodontics. It is responsible for educating dental students and training them to provide patient dental care related to periodontal diseases during the last two years of study the fourth and fifth. It plays an important role in maintaining oral health and treating periodontal diseases to prevent tooth loss and improve the quality of life for patients based on theoretical bases. The Oral Diagnosis department plays an essential role in educating dental students about the diagnostic process and the use of diagnostic tools. They are responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of various oral and dental conditions. The department’s main objective is to evaluate the oral health status of patients and determine the most appropriate treatment options based on their individual needs.

 Duties

The Department of Oral Diagnosis comprises several branches, and each one is responsible for teaching certain subjects, as follows:

·         Oral medicine is specialized in giving lectures and clinical training for fifth-grade students about diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of different conditions and syndromes that affect the oral cavity and temporomandibular joint.

·         Oral pathology is dedicated to teaching the histopathological nature of oral diseases and syndromes for the fourth grade and training the students on how to diagnose these conditions microscopically. In addition, the department is proud of having the only dedicated lab for diagnostic services in Iraq that offers these services to referred patients from other hospitals and clinics.

·         Oral Radiology: it gives lectures for the third grade and the topics start with physics and hazards of radiation then how to differentiate different


oral conditions in different diagnostic radiographs. This is accompanied by practical training for the students in the clinics of the department.

·         General pathology gives lectures about the histopathological features of different conditions that affect body organs.

·         Oral histology specialized in teaching the histology of oral tissues in health and diseases.

·         Embryology dedicated to teaching the embryonic development of oral tissues in particular and body tissues in general.

 

·      Different topics about periodontal disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment in addition to periodontal aspects of dental implant and maintenance are given to the fourth and fifth grades, this is associated with clinical training.

The treatment, depending on the case, starts with giving oral hygiene instruction, scaling and root planning ending with a different range of surgical interventions with or without regenerative therapy

6.      Basic Science Department

The Basic Science Department in the College of Dentistry is responsible for teaching the fundamental sciences that form the basis of modern dentistry. These   sciences   include anatomy,   general physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, oral  microbiology, general pathology, chemistry, biology, medical physics and computer sciences.

 Duties

This department is dedicated to teaching general basic knowledge that integrates with dental sciences which is essential to complete the learning process and graduating high-quality dentists. The topics covered by this department include:

 

·       Oral microbiology, pharmacology, theory and practice for the third-grade students.

·         General Physiology, General histology, and biochemistry theory and practice for the second-grade students.
