About the Department and Academic Program
The Department of Biology was established in 1989 to meet the needs of the various governorates of Iraq for qualified teaching staff for secondary schools for biology. The first group was accepted in 1989-1990. The first group graduated from the department in the year 1993-1992, and the department continued to accept students, as 28 groups graduated from the department with 1012 students, some of them continued their studies and obtained a master's and doctorate degrees, while the other were appointed to The Ministry of Education in the various governorates. The Department of Biology has witnessed a clear quantitative and qualitative development since its establishment until now. This has been represented in keeping pace with the scientific development locally and globally, and equipping the department with modern devices such as DNA extraction devices, PCR devices, electrophoresis devices, chemical extraction devices, and advanced tissue culture devices. The period of study in the department for undergraduate studies is four years, during which the student studies various specialized subjects (cell science - animal science - histology - plant anatomy - algae - invertebrates - microbiology - general insects – genetics- chordates - plant morphology - plant physiology - applied bacteria – parasites- molecular biology - biochemistry - analytical chemistry) in addition to educational materials (educational psychology - developmental psychology - foundations of education - scientific research curriculum - educational administration - curricula and teaching methods - educational guidance - measurement and evaluation - teaching applications - human rights - freedoms - English and Arabic). The department aims to graduate staffs (assistant lecturers) in the various specializations of life sciences, in order to provide the corresponding faculties in the departments of Biology in the various universities of the country with these staffs that take over practical tasks in the laboratories, as well as preparing qualified teachers for the Directorate of Education to teach in the middle schools and various institutes. Additionally, employing in scientific laboratories: 1- Environment lab, 2- Animal physiology lab, 3- Microbiology lab, 4- Biotechnology lab, 5- Plant physiology lab, 6- Insect lab, 7- Herb, 8- Animal house, 9- Museum animal.
