Mechanisms to confront the danger of drugs on young people

Drugs are the biggest danger that threatens Iraqi society at the present time, and this danger may exceed the danger of extremist terrorist ideology, because of the extent of psychological, health, societal and even security damages as a result of drug abuse, and this is what prompted many specialists to recommend to Iraqi governments and official institutions the importance of formulating a comprehensive strategy to combat drug abuse. Drugs, just as there is a national strategy to combat terrorism, and we agree with this proposition because the phenomenon of drug proliferation and the volume of drug abusers and addicts is increasing rapidly and requires strategic solutions equivalent to the scale of the disaster that threatens our society and our youth.

And the number of drug abusers and addicts is increasing rapidly, and requires strategic solutions equivalent to the magnitude of the disaster that threatens our society and our youth.

We are not here to address the issue of the causes and consequences of drug abuse, because the research on this subject is very long and goes into details, but here we present a set of urgent recommendations to the Iraqi decision-maker to confront the danger of drugs on young people, and these recommendations are:

1-  Drafting a national strategy entitled "Strategy to combat drugs in Iraq" in the formulation and implementation of which most official and unofficial state institutions participate, with the support of the media, and the participation of experts and academics in the field of strategy and strategic planning, and giving a wide temporal and spatial space to discuss this strategy before it is approved by the Iraqi government .

2-  Allocating awareness workshops in Iraqi universities, institutes and schools to warn of the danger of drugs to the individual and society, and allocating part of the educational supervision tasks to take care of following up on drug addiction issues among the student community.

3-   Recommending the establishment of research centers concerned with theoretical and field studies in the field of drug control, and providing the Iraqi decision-maker with options to confront the crisis of drug proliferation and inventing ways to manage this crisis according to scientific foundations.

4-  Providing centers for the treatment of addicts and providing them with psychological support and monitoring them until they get out of the state of addiction.

5-   Assigning a major role to religious institutions in Iraq to organize an awareness campaign to confront the danger of drugs by allocating issues of addiction and drugs in Friday sermons, because of the great positive impact of mosques on youth.

6-   Recommending increasing government attention to crowded popular areas, regulating informal housing for security, and setting up security sensors within these poor areas, which represent a suitable environment for drug abuse, promotion and trafficking.

7-  Conducting a periodic medical examination to detect drug abusers, and everyone undergoes this test (medical examination) to diagnose addicts and subject them to treatment.

8-  Encouraging graduate students to research and develop solutions to the drug problem in Iraq within their master's and doctoral research projects.
