Department of Desert Geology:
The Department of Desert Geology was established since the establishment of the Center for Desert Studies at the University of Anbar in 1992. It seeks to achieve a set of goals at the national level via conducting special studies and researches related to the desert geology in the desert areas. According to the letter of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research / Dept. of Research and Development No. 1220 on 11/07/2005, it is considered one of the effective configurations of the center.

The Vision:
Supporting the scientific research fields in the field of desert geology specialty and remote sensing studies and its relationship to the desertification as it provides the capabilities and provides the necessary field consultations to conduct the field studies for these specialties.

 The Message:
Achieving and providing scientific studies, presenting applied research and preparing a data bank on the desert geology and underground water resources as well as in the field of optimal investment of Western desert resources to achieve sustainability, manage these resources and serve the community, besides the implementing of the related projects according to specific goals.

 The Objectives:
1. The department aims at conducting the specialized scientific researches in the field of Anbar's desert Geology to preserve the environment and the rational use of the mineral and groundwater resources as they contribute to the development of the desert.
2. Providing the advisory and scientific services to the public and private sectors in the fields of the geological specialization and groundwater resources and their management.
3. Contributing to the transfer of the modern technologies and adopting remote sensing in monitoring and controlling the vast desert resources and providing a data bank that serves the requirements of the work.
4. Completing the studies and the scientific projects in accordance with the quality control specifications and the international standards that based on the guide of procedures and work instructions within the contexts of the works, ydrogeological and geological activities including the United States Geological Specifications (USGS) and the Iraqi ones.

Scientific Activities of the Department:
1. The Completion of the sulfur and asphalt springs (Heet - Kubesa) project.
2. The Completion of the hydrological and hydrochemical project of the Euphrates from Al-Qaim to Fallujah.
3. Completion of the hydrogeology project of the Al-Daba’h Basin - East Rutba.
4. Participation in the study and the discussion of the phenomenon of fish mortality in Al-Habbaniyah Lake (6/2012)
5. It has also completed a number of the scientific pamphlets. The most important ones are:
The Hydrogeology in Management and Planning (a part of the Strategic Investment Plans for Groundwater in Anbar Province) 2008. Center of Desert Studies.
The uses of mineral spring water in the medicinal medications. 2008. Center of Desert Studies.
The Management of the underground water resources. 2008. Center of Desert Studies.
The department has also participated in all relevant specialty conferences held at Anbar University.
6. The contribution of the department's researchers in teaching the postgraduate and undergraduate studies in the Iraqi universities and preparing specialized courses in the center’s research fields to serve the community.
7.  A laboratory for remote sensing researches has been created within the structure of the Desert Geology Department. It has the ability to provide archived satellite visuals from specialized sites to monitor the manifestations of the desertification, desert resources and to provide the space data according to the requirements of the work and scientific studies.
