The College of Medicine was founded in 1989 to contribute highly-qualified medical cadres to society in order to combine efforts with other colleges of Medicine in Iraq to solve health problems, eliminate diseases, and organize health, preventive, and treatment campaigns.

Actual teaching started in the academic year 1990-1991 with 67 admitted students. Numbers of admitted students increased till it reached its peak with 180 students in the academic year 1997-1998. The admission plan was fixed at 100 students in the subsequent years.

The college seeks to qualify highly skilled doctors on the levels of education, training, culture and society, Committed to the ethics of medicine, familiar with health problems and the their treatment, and presenting society with effective healing and diagnostic services on all areas of medicine.

The term of study in the college is 6 years leading to Bachelor degree in medicine and general surgery. The college adopts the annual system of study. The graduates of the college are qualified to work as doctors in all medical fields.

Postgraduate studies were inaugurated in the college in the academic year 1994-1995 by granting higher diploma in internal medicine, surgery, and gynecology; and master degree in microbiology. Higher diploma in pediatrics and master degree in pharmacology followed in the academic year 1998-1999. Master degree in community medicine followed in the academic year 2010-2011.
