Wind turbines installation

Iraq have abundant fossil fuels reserves. Nevertheless, the country is not immune to global energy challenges, such as high levels of pollution, depletion of fossil fuels, and an increase in demand for energy resources. These threats require great innovation, and the country has already started measures to meet these challenges. At the level of University of Anbar, developed a vision to gain more dependence on renewable energy and diversify its sources. This measure helped to achieve higher rank in the Green Metrics classification significantly within only two years of entering the university to fulfill the requirements of this classification, as it became second in the Iraqi rank. All these measures will contribute significantly to diversifying the sources of energy and support the state in achieving its goal of reducing the effects of the carbon footprint.

Research in the renewable energy field is not new in Iraq. In 1981, Iraq witnessed the construction of the first renewable energy research center in the Middle East. However, scientific progress in this field slowed down after 2003. University of Anbar aims to make quantitative and qualitative changes in the scientific and technical movement in the country in general and the governorate in particular, and the university presidency directs research and service centers to bring about these changes in order to restore Iraqi universities to their former duties. The interest of leadership on the importance of achieving sustainable development, so the university supported the Renewable Energy Research Center to be a pioneer in this field, as the center relies entirely on solar energy to provide its needs of electrical energy and in order to complete the needs of electrical energy requirements, the staff installed two of wind turbines. With a generating capacity of 6.5 kilowatts, the height of the turbine tower reached 18 meters. The turbines were connected with the solar energy system in the center to form a hybrid system energy that complements one another in providing electrical energy requirements.

The installation of these wind turbines, in addition to the fact that they will provide the center with additional needs of electrical energy, will enable researchers at the center to access practical research on developing the performance of such systems. This step will also contribute to raising public awareness and the ability to absorb renewable energy technologies.
