Conclusion of a workshop to promote rural and urban recycling in Iraq

The Head of the Planning and Databases Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre, Dr Ahmed Saud Mohammed, attends the activities of a workshop to promote rural and urban recycling in the country, organized by the Ministry of Water Resources and in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP).

The activities of the workshop, which revolved around promoting innovative technologies and methods of rural and urban recycling in Iraq to face the challenges of water scarcity and ecosystem degradation, to enhance resilience with local leadership of vulnerable communities and smallholder farmers to achieve water and food security for all on the land of Babylon Hotel, was concluded in the presence of some general managers and specialists in water affairs in the ministry, a delegation from the Directorate of Dams and Reservoirs in the Kurdistan Region and specialists in the water issue.

The second day of the workshop witnessed some presentations on the Integrated National Framework for Drought Risk Management, Multi-Stage Electrocoagulation/Adsorption System for Groundwater Treatment, Hydrogen Sulphide Dehydration System from Well Water and Water Reuse for Water and Human Security and Ecosystem Sustainability, in addition to presentations on wastewater treatment projects and sewage project in the Holy Province of Karbala.

The workshop also discussed innovations and cost-effective approaches that the Ministry can adopt to enhance access to water, challenges and perceptions about the use of treated wastewater and restricted agricultural practices.

He opened the door for discussions and interventions between the attendees, including specialists and researchers, to come up with clear scientific visions to advance the scientific and practical reality of the water resources sector. In conclusion, the outputs and recommendations of the workshop were presented in preparation for working on it, benefiting from the foreign experiences participating in the workshop, and distributing certificates of appreciation to the participants.
