Heavy spring rain on Iraq this week

The Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar announced meteorological forecasts for the coming days, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassam Mukhlif, a climate expert in the Natural Resources Development Department at the Centre, stated that Iraq is exposed to a state of atmospheric instability and rainy spring weather during this week, as a result of the deepening of the barclonic situation on Iraq in the upper layers of the atmosphere, the activity of the Red Sea depression and the humid tide from the Arabian Gulf and an extension of the Mediterranean depression as follows:

Monday, 29/4/2024 - The beginning of the entry of the depression from the southwestern side of the country, as a rainstorm is concentrated on the southwestern region of (Anbar) and northern Karbala, as well as the rainy situation extends to Samawa and Muthanna.

Tuesday, 30/4/2024 - As there is a merger of the Mediterranean depression with the Red Sea depression with the deepening of the barclonic situation in the upper layers of the atmosphere, so the heavy rain increases in most parts of Iraq except for the south eastern region - and the intensity of the rainstorm will be in the afternoon over the western region (Anbar), especially Al-Qaim and Rutba, as well as the southern region Muthana, Karbala and Najaf, then the rain recedes at night, except for Al-Qaim and Al-Rutba, as the rainstorm refocuses on them.

Wednesday, 1/5/2024 - At the beginning of Wednesday night, the activity of the Red Sea depression is renewed, supported by the humid tide from the Arabian Gulf, so that the rainstorm will be over Baghdad, Diyala and the eastern parts of Anbar, as well as Kut, Muthanna and Nasiriyah, then the impact of the depression expands during the day, especially before noon, to include the rest of most regions of Iraq, and the intensity of rainstorms will be concentrated in north-western Anbar, Mosul, Diyala, Hilla and Kut, and the summit will be in Nasiriyah and Maysan at night.

Thursday, 2/5/2024 - The depression is based at the beginning of Thursday night along the eastern parts of the country, as well as Mosul and Kirkuk, while during the day it will be an extension of the Mediterranean depression that covers the western parts (Anbar Governorate) and northern Iraq, while the extension of the Red Sea depression and with the support of the Arabian Gulf covers the eastern and south eastern parts of the country, as the rain intensity is on Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, then Basra, while in the evening, the rainy situation will be on Mosul, Tikrit and eastern Anbar, and the rainy peak on eastern Anbar ( Habbaniyah – Ramadi – Hit – Thirthar Lake).

Friday, 3/5/2024 - The depression is based at the beginning of Friday night on the northern and central parts of Iraq, especially Sulaymaniyah, Diyala and the capital, and its extensions reach Najaf, and this situation continues during the day and the rainy peak will be on Sulaymaniyah and Diyala, while the western and southwestern parts of the country will be clear.

Expectations indicate the continued impact of depressions (God willing) on Iraq early next week, until then in anticipation of hopefully, and despite the hope to increase the water balance of Iraq in terms of positive, but we would like to point out that this expected rainy situation has a negative impact on grain crops, wheat and barley, so the areas where the two crops have reached maturity must be accelerated by farmers to harvest them to avoid the expected situation.
