The Department of Sociology is one of the vital and effective Departments in advancing the societies and its development. This science is of great importance in the parade of social life. The Department was opened in (2004-2005).

The importance of sociology is highlighted in identifying the elements of society, and weaknesses and strengths in society and motivating the role of individuals in fruitful team work. It also helps in setting sound developmental plans commensurating with the values and capabilities of this society. In addition, it gives a clear and correct perception of any society, thus facilitating dealing with it, advancing it and addressing its problems. The importance of sociology cannot stop at that, but rather goes further and fathoms into understanding and analyzing many social phenomena, as it goes hand in hand with human societies. Today, we in Iraqi society, which has been exposed to many crises and wars, desperately need to pay attention to this science and expand its fields and take with its proposals for the advancement of the dire Iraqi reality. This requires us as researchers and specialists in the field of social sciences to intensify applied studies and identify the most prominent threats that put the Iraqi society at a crossroads.
