Satellite images monitor the formation of runoff events in Horan Valley

The Planning and Databases Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar announced recent satellite images of the European Space Agency to form runoff events and collect them in the Rutba Dam. Images taken on 26 October illustrate the great potential of remote sensing techniques in flood tracking and developing rainfall-runoff models, especially in remote areas of the western region of Iraq.

The department stated that these images and data are part of the preparations to monitor the rainy season for this year and the use of these satellite images to monitor flood waves and runoff rains in the valleys of the western region, especially for the Rutba Dam, as shown in the recent image of October 26, 2023, where the runoff rains in the valley show the direction of the Rutba Dam area, and the other image taken on October 21, 2023 for the same area before the floods occurred, which gives a clear perception of the hydrology of the region and the impact of the degree of bifurcation of the valleys and the rank of the waterway ( stream order) and its relationship to the volume of flowing runoff, where these parameters are of great importance in hydrological study.
