Department of Combat Desertification

    The Department was established since the origination of the Center of Desert Studies at University of Anbar  in 1992, and it seeks to achieve many of aims at the national level through conducting studies and research on combat desertification control in desert areas. According to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research approval/ Department of Research and Development No. 1220 on 11 July 2005 as one of the effective formations of the center of desert studies.

The vision

  It is Supporting the important activities of researchers in the field of desert lands cultivation, surveying and classification of soils and water resources. it provides the capabilities and provides the necessary field guidance for conducting field studies for those specialties.

The message

  It Providing a research environment that stimulates the advancement and excellence of scientific research, and disseminating knowledge, and providing distinguished applied research in the fields related to the desert environment such as water management and quality, studying land degradation and neutralization phenomena, studying sand dunes and dust storms, methods of treating them and  developing energy plants, and the wild plants of medicinal and aromatic value . The department is heads by an academic who holds a doctorate in agricultural sciences and with the scientific title Assistant Professor and is considered one of the members of the Center’s Board of Directors.

The aims

1.     The department aims to identify, program and implement all scientific research related to agricultural production systems in desert regions.

2.     Prepare future plans to introduce new plant species and genotypes of nutritional value, which are an important factor in reviving the desert environment to reach of food security for the country.

3.     Improving production systems by using appropriate technologies to manage water and reduce losses.

4.     Carrying out studies of an artistic, economic and social nature that contribute to finding solutions for desert societies.

5.     Contribute to the dissemination of the results of scientific research and the development of information and technologies that can be exploited by administrative and development institutions, professional bodies and specialized institutes.

 The activities

·        It is providing scientific consultations to researchers of universities and scientific, and service institutions.

·        The inaugurating of the plant tissue culture laboratory as the basis for preparing various studies concerned with the fields of plant resistance to the stresses of the various desert environments, the most important of which are the strains of salinity and drought.

·        It was holding scientific conferences, seminars and workshops in cooperation with the center’s administration and local and international scientific institutions.

·        The preparing scientific studies for national Iraqi and international institutions.

·        The Preparing specialized courses in the center's research fields to serve the community.

·        The preparing educational and educational brochures and pamphlets.

·        The presenting development projects to governmental bodies and institutions.

·        The supervision by department employees on graduate students.

·        It gave contribution scientific lessons by the department researchers to postgraduate and undergraduate in Iraqi universities.

·        The organizing field visits to desert areas to conduct scientific studies in various disciplines related to the department.

·        The Affiliation of the department members with many Arab and international scientific organizations.

·        The preparing training courses for employees of the department in cooperation with research centers and local and Arab universities.
