Research Title :

Axial heat-transfer enhancement by flow oscillation for high heat-flux applications

An oscillatory-flow heat exchanger was designed, built and tested to demonstrate a new method for providing high axial heat flux based on theoretical solutions for unsteady laminar flow for heat transfer in tubes. The test apparatus was constructed as a 250 mm matrix of 42 tubes, each 3 mm in diameter, and its performance was evaluated by a series of oscillating fluxes. The device was experimentally tested with many liquids (water - oil - coolant - nanofluid) for a wide range of frequencies and the performance of the exchanger was in good agreement with the theoretical results. For this particular design, the axial thermal conductivity was greater about 30,000 times the molecular conductivity of the liquid (Molecular Thermal Conductivity), and the heat flux for each degree of temperature difference of about (70,000 W/m2 K) was similar to what was achieved in high heat flux applications.
