Cultural heritage and its role in bringing about sustainable development


Under the patronage of the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Mushtak Taleb Al-Neda, and as part of the activities of the Sustainable Development Week, the Upper Euphrates Basin Development Center, in cooperation with the College of Literature / Department of History and the Anbar Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate, held a discussion seminar tagged: (Civilizational Heritage and its Role in Creating Sustainable Development), and that On Monday, 30/5/2022, in the discussion hall at the College of Literature - University of Anbar.

The session was opened by the Director of the Upper Euphrates Basin Development Center, Prof. Dr. Ammar Hatem Kamel, with a word of thanks and praise to the College of Literature, which hosted the workshop, and a word of thanks and appreciation to those who responded to the invitation. In order to activate sustainable development in all its aspects, and the role of the center in highlighting the civilized aspect of the Upper Euphrates regions and the possibility of revitalizing the tourism and heritage aspect of those regions, which is positively reflected the region and achieving sustainable development goals through the most important characteristic of those regions, which is the great cultural heritage and intellectual heritage, and presenting the bright image of the region to the whole world, He praised the great support provided by the university to the events and trends of heritage neighborhoods and the preservation of cultural identity by all possible means and to include this within the university's strategic plans. After that, the presentations of the lectures were started by researchers and specialists in this field, and they were as follows:

-        The reality and future of the antiquities of Anbar by Mr. Ammar Ali Hamdi / Inspector of Antiquities and Heritage of Anbar Governorate, in which he indicated the existence of something more than 450 archaeological sites in the province can serve as a basis for a large tourism development for the region. He appealed to the concerned authorities to support this trend and work on the return of exploratory excavation missions to the region and issue legal legislation to support the antiquities inspectorate in Iraq and those working in this field.

-        Problems and Challenges of the Civilizational Sites in the west of Iraq / by Prof. Dr. Ziad Owaid Suwaidan / Teaching at the College of Literature - Department of History in which the researcher referred to the cultural depth of the region and to modern theories indicating that the civilization of Mesopotamia started From the regions of western Iraq and moved to the rest of the regions based on the archaeological discoveries that accompanied the construction of the Haditha dam and the necessity of returning excavations to the region and supporting the trend for the creation of the Department of Archeology at the College Literature.

-        Highlighting the importance of the cultural heritage of Anbar Governorate, a step towards strengthening the tourism sector / by Dr. Omar Yaseen Neda / Head of the Human Development Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Development Center, in which he referred to the tourism potentials of the area’s landmarks, including the waterwheels (Nawa’ir) of Heet town, which through a simple project has become a destination for visitors from different regions of Iraq.

-        The linguistic and historical origins of some of the vocabulary used in the dialects of the Upper Euphrates regions/ for the instructor Dr. Ahmed Taha Yaseen/ one of the researchers of the Upper Euphrates Basin Development Center, through which he emphasized the pride of the people of the Upper Euphrates regions in their identity and culture and their use of vocabulary in their local dialect and its ancient historical origins and popular foods circulated since the dawn History that can be invested in making dictionaries for it as part of the definition, increasing cultural awareness and supporting the media aspect to activate tourism and achieve sustainable development goals.

After the presentation of the preparations by the researchers, the discussion was opened, which affected the value and importance of the topic of the workshop, during which Mr. Ammar Ali, Inspector of Antiquities and Heritage of Anbar, explained the obstacles that hinder the conduct of excavations and the most important aspect of security and material support, as well as the devastation and destruction that is being exposed He has archaeological and heritage sites in the province from thieves and vandals and the military operations that the province was subjected to during the previous various periods, and he explained the necessary solutions to preserve and develop them if the necessary capabilities were available to achieve this.

The workshop was attended by the respected Dean of the College of Literature, Prof. Arif Abed Sayel, the Honorable Adviser to the Governor of Anbar for Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Jamal Muhammad Hamid, and a number of specialists and experts in the field of history, civilization and archeology. As well as number of teachers and students at the university.

At the end of the workshop, it was agreed on a number of important recommendations that will be formulated and submitted to the official authorities in the hope that they will work to preserve the heritage and civilization of the areas of the upper Euphrates in Anbar Governorate. Letters of thanks and appreciation were presented to the participants in the workshop.
