The Phonetic Significance of the Arabic Letters in the Holy Qur’an (Harf Al-Seen)

Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, and prayers and peace be upon our prophet Muhammad, the Master of the Messengers, and upon his family and companions, and after...

Before starting to explain the phonetic signification, it is necessary to clarify the concept of sound and its impact on the language, for the sound is the instrument of articulation, and the essence that is carried out by fragmentation and by which composition is found. The sounds are the orbit of the linguistic analysis of the language. (1)

Language is sounds through which a person expresses what he wants to communicate to others, so the sound and meaning or symbols and mental images and the relationship between them is the basis on which linguistic studies are based. The science of semantics is included in the framework of theoretical linguistics, and semantics is the fact that a thing is in a state that necessitates knowledge of something else, and the first thing is the signifier and the second is the signified. According to the ancients, it suggests guidance and guidance towards something, and the word signification is more general than guidance, so any meaning intended from the linguistic word, or that the word bears, has no significance unless it is capable of meaning and is called semantics (science of meaning), which is one of the branches of linguistics He focuses his attention on the study of meaning. (2)

And each sound has connotations, and the sound of the Seine has indications of its duration with locations in the structures of Arabic words and structures in which this suggestion appeared. Al-Seen-S-Z-Zay), and the scholars of Tajweed paid special attention to this characteristic and tried to clarify what is meant by whistling. Makki bin Abi Talib said (The reality of whistling is that the pronunciation that comes out strongly with the wind from the tip of the tongue from between the folds, you hear it with a clear sense of hearing) (3) )

When the s sound comes out, the two vocal cords do not fluctuate, so the sine is silent, whispering, gingival fricative, and the morphology, homogeneity, and approximation between the sounds often calls for abandoning the original and adopting the branch. If it is recited by one of the following letters: (Al-Ghain - Al-Khaa' - Al-Qaf - Al-Ta'a)

The Almighty said: (As if they were being driven) Al-Anfal 6/ while they were being patted, (Miss Saqr) Al-Qamar 48/ Saqr,

(And I am bestowing upon you) Luqman 20 / Asbagh. (4)

The signification in the letter Seen is a tool when compared with other tools in terms of significance, and it is divided into:

1-The indication of continuity and continuity: This is mentioned in the Almighty’s saying (The foolish among the people will say: What turned them away from their qiblah which they were upon. Say: To God belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path} Al-Baqara: 142, so the Sein came as an indication of the continuation.

2-The indication of invisibility: The Most High said: (He who whispers into people’s breasts) An-Nas: 6. The repetition of the C signifies the atmosphere of hidden speech, for the C has a clear effect in its whispering and concealment.

3-The evidence is the realization of the occurrence of the thing: the Almighty said (And your Lord will give you, and you will be satisfied) [Al-Duha: 5], so Al-Seen affirms a temporal effect, which is the period for souls to be filled with comfort, and His bounty, the Almighty, is a leader in achievement

4-The indication of the expansion of the thing: The Most High said (And to the earth, how is it flattened) Al-Ghashiya: 20, so the meeting of the s, the ta and the ha indicates the expansion of the thing, and from that known surface.

5-The connotation is flowing: the seine, the baa’, and the lam denote flowing and spreading, and it was mentioned in the Almighty’s saying: (He sent down water from the sky, and valleys flowed according to their measure, and the torrent was supported by a rising scum) (Al-Anam: 13), so the indication of flowing is present as the course of a valley.

6- Indicating pleasure: the meeting of the seine, the eye, and the signifier is an origin that indicates goodness and pleasure, as well as the yemen in the matter, and it is mentioned in the Almighty’s saying (The Day that comes, no soul will speak except by His permission, so some of them will be wretched and happy) Hud: 104.

7-Indicating residence: Seine, Kaf, and Noun are an origin that denotes the placement of a thing in stillness, so it is still in contrast to turbulence and movement. The Most High said (what is still during the night and the day) Al-Anam: 13, so the sound of the Seine has a clear effect in denoting calm and stillness. (5)

Linguistic sounds are considered the first events of linguistic manifestations, rather they are the first building block, and through them we realize the relationship between phonetic and written symbols, and this plays an important role in linguistic communication and understanding language and how it is used in human communication, and its aim is to study the linguistic context and how language is used by speakers in society.

There is a long talk on this topic, and I have mentioned some examples and illuminations through which I tried to explain the significance of the sound of the Seen in the Holy Qur’an.

I ask God the Most High, the Almighty, with His grace and generosity, to teach us what will benefit us and benefit us with what He has taught us that He is the Guardian of that and the Powerful.
