Significant increase in water storage for Haditha and Mosul dams

The Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar announced a significant increase in the water storage of the main dams in Iraq, namely the Mosul Dam on the Tigris River and the Haditha Dam on the Euphrates River.

Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen Afen, a meteorological officer at the centre, said that the images taken by the European satellite showed a significant increase in storage levels in the Mosul Dam as a result of the recent wave of rain compared to previous periods.

For his part, Engineer Ahmed Ismail Odeh, from the Planning and Databases Department at the Centre, said that the storage levels in the Haditha Dam on the Euphrates River have also increased significantly, according to satellite images captured of the dam's reservoir in March 2024, which is consistent with what the Upper Euphrates Basin Development Centre announced of the occurrence of large runoff events in the valleys of the region as a result of the recent rain wave, which, according to the centre’s meteorology, reached (64) mm within one day.

It is noteworthy that the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre – University of Anbar has several field monitoring stations, to a meteorological unit using satellite images, as part of the centre’s program to monitor and study climate change in implementation of the University of Anbar's strategic plan for Vision 2030 to achieve sustainable development goals.
