The role of vegetation cover and its impact on climate change resulting from global warming in Iraq

Iraq suffers from high temperatures, the impact of dry winds and the recurrence of dust storms in the central and southern regions in particular. This requires many studies and an understanding of their environmental, economic and social impacts at the present and future, to reach successful means to reduce the negative effects and achieve tangible results in reducing the increase in temperature increases. The increasing (global warming), and dust storms that have a negative impact on all aspects of environmental, health, economic, social and even political life in Iraq and among neighboring countries on the one hand and Advancement of environment and investment of the achieved results economically and socially and environmentally on the other hand.

Climate change and its effects have become the preoccupation of the world these days, natural disasters such as severe drought and dust storms that strike the world in general and Iraq in particular, and the severe heat wave in the United States of America and Iraq, and other manifestations are all indicators of the occurrence of climate change, so the vegetation cover is one of the important factors to maintain The balance of gases in the atmosphere, the most important of which is oxygen, and it has a positive effect in mitigating global warming. Plant covers nearly 20% of the planet, which is a very small percentage compared to the proportions of water and land. article briefly explains the role of vegetation cover, the importance of farming, the establishment of forests and plant reserves, and the different benefits they reflect to humans and the environment. and Finding quick and essential solutions to reduce and limit these natural phenomena.

The most important of these solutions and the least costly in economic terms is to evaluate and support the cultivation of trees and perennial plants and work to establish dense forests and expand the cultivation of palms and citrus to reduce those destructive phenomena to the environment and to humans. Trees, shrubs and perennial herbaceous plants contribute to softening the atmosphere through the process of transpiration and emission of water vapor, increasing the release of oxygen gas and reducing carbon dioxide that is directly or indirectly harmful to the environment and the main cause of global warming .

Vegetation also increases plant production resources, preserves soils from wind erosion and erosion, helps increase organic matter, improves physical and chemical properties of soil, preserves the productive capacity of lands, reduces the risk of salinity and drought through large shading of the soil surface, and reduces the intensity of evaporation / transpiration and thus reduces heat intensity. Which Caused by the sun's rays or reflected from the surface of the earth, as it affects the movement of winds and increases rainfall  presence and increase of vegetation cover and forests in particular, without any doubt, contribute to the emergence of local climatic ecosystems that affect the climate of Iraq positively, because of their important role in building biomass and vegetation, and its expansion, density and activities in vital processes, including photosynthesis and the resulting effects of Carbon dioxide absorption, evaporation and transpiration, the vegetation cover is not only environmentally friendly, but represents the cornerstone of its construction. The best example and evidence of this are the negative effects resulting from the drying of the marshes, the removal of forests and the cutting of trees, and its reflection on the high temperature and dry winds accompanied by dust storms, and the lack of rain at different regions at Iraq. One acre of forest trees absorbs 140 kg of carbon dioxide, which is the primary contributor to global warming. that, how much gas is absorbed by millions of dunums of forests, and the corresponding production of oxygen and water vapor, in addition to absorbing 3-5 tons / dunums of dust annually, purifying the air, softening the atmosphere, reducing the impact of pollutants and lowering temperatures, and as a result is reflected on human life, and her role great positive role in climate change.
