Hemoglobin A1c Test or HbA1c Test measures the amount of glucose or sugar associated with hemoglobin in the blood, and HbA1c helps diagnose diabetes, as high HbA1c reading indicates diabetes, and bad control of blood glucose level for a long time leads to serious complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, or heart disease.
Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, and part of the glucose is bound in hemoglobin the amount of glucose associated with hemoglobin in the blood (HbA1c) reflects the average blood glucose over a period ranging from two to three months ago, where red blood cells live for two to three months.
The HbA1c gives an image of the average blood glucose during the previous three months, which shows the extent of the individual's ability to control diabetes during the previous period, and to know whether the treatment or diet that the individual follows is appropriate.
