Discussion of a master's thesis for the student (Fahad Jamal Khalifa)

The public discussion of the master's student (Fahad Jamal Khalifa) of the Department of Applied Geology - College of Science - University of Anbar took place on Thursday, 12/1/2023 in the Jaber Bin Hayyan Hall in the College of Science for his thesis tagged: -

(Study effect of water storage on sediments and water of Haditha dam reservoir within Anbar Governorate Iraq).

   Aims of the study

1. Studying the effect of variation in water levels and Discharge and its impact on water and sediment quality. Adopted the all information supported by chemical analysis can be estimate the relations between water level, Discharge and water, sediments quality .

2. Studying the chemical properties of Haditha reservoir and comparing them with the water above and below the dam (Euphrates river).

3. Study of the isotopic content to identify: the origin, quality of water.

4. Determining the chemical characteristics of the sediments of Haditha reservoir compared to the above and below the dam (Euphrates river).

   CONCLUSIONS

1- The climate of the study area is characterized as arid, and evaporation is much more rainfall in the study area, this indicated that the study area are effected from climate change.

2- The discharge and water-level of Haditha reservoir and Euphrates river are increase during the wet period (January, February and March), and decrease during the dry period (July and August). The discharge and water-level during (2022), was less than (2021), which led to effective on the physical and chemical properties of water and sediment on study area.

3- Cations and anions values ??during the wet period are greater than the dry period due to the lack of rain, which led to reducing the dissolution of cations and anions, also decrease in the discharge and water level in the Haditha reservoir and the Euphrates river during the studied periods.

4- The sediments of the study area contain oxides (CaO, MgO, SO3, SrO), with rates exceeding the permissible limits, while (Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, Na2O, TiO2, MnO, K2O) within the permissible limits. The concentration of oxides for sediment dry was higher than the sediments wet, except the (CaO and MgO), because of the oxides of wet sediments are immersed in water, which leads to their dissolution with water, unlike dry sediments.
