Biography

Alaa S. Al-Waisy holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science. He earned his Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 2009 and his Master of Science (MSc) degree in 2011, both in Computer Science, from Al-Anbar University. In 2018, he completed his PhD in Digital Imaging and Visualization at the University of Bradford. During his doctoral studies, he focused on advanced techniques in imaging and visualization, with applications in various fields. His research interests cover a broad range of topics, including:

  • Pattern recognition, where he explores algorithms and models for identifying and classifying patterns in data.
  • Image processing, focusing on techniques to enhance, analyze, and interpret digital images.
  • Computer vision, developing systems that enable machines to interpret and process visual data as humans do.
  • Medical imaging, creating and improving imaging techniques for healthcare applications, such as diagnostic tools and treatment planning.
  • Biometric systems, including both unimodal and multimodal approaches, to enhance security, identification, and verification through methods like facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, and iris recognition.

His work contributes to fields that combine theoretical advancements with practical applications in technology and healthcare.

Supervision

Academic Supervision Activity.

  • Al-Waisy was involved in the supervision process of three PhD students' projects and one master's project at the computer science department of Bradford University, in two different areas include, space weather and medical imaging.
  • Al-Waisy Supervised over 30 BSc students.

Other

  • Results-oriented software developer with 14+ years of experience developing, testing, and maintaining multiple software applications to address many challenging tasks in image processing, medical imaging, AI and computer vision.
  • Al-Waisy was responsible for designing and developing up to 10 applications projects in the last 6 years using different programming languages such as Matlab, Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Currently, involved with a team of 5 proficient academic researchers to develop an Effective Multi-Level Segmentation of the gestational and yolk sacs using texture-based trainable models for pregnancy assessment from ultrasound images.
  • In 2021, collaborated with a team of 3 software developers to develop a modern deep learning framework in robot vision for automated bean leaves diseases detection.
  • 2018-2021, Al-Waisy was a principal developer for a number of medical imaging applications (e.g., Sentizer web application, COVID-DeepNet, COVID-CheXNet, Corneal Endothelium Analysis System Version 2, etc.). These applications were built using different programming languages (e.g., Matlab, Python, etc.).
  • 2014-2018, Al-Waisy was a principal developer for a number of biometric systems (e.g., IrisConvNet, Multimodal Deep Face Recognition (MDFR) Framework, etc.). These applications were built using Matlab programming language.
  • 2015-2018, Al-Waisy was involved in the coding process of some image processing techniques at the back-end and designing and implementing all the GUIs of the CEAS V 1.0 software. The CEAS V 1.0 software has been extensively used by ophthalmologists at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK and Division of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Doha, Qatar.
  • In 2013, Al-Waisy served as lecturer of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), web programming languages (e.g., HTML, CSS and JavaScript) at the computer science department, Al-Maarif University College.
